The Venice of Brazil

Recife is the capital city of Pernambuco. With about 1.5 million inhabitants it is the largest city of North-Eastern Brazil.

Not only the paradise-like beach stretching over 7 km attracts many travellers, also the numerous channels and rivers offer unique experiences. Sometimes Recife is also called the “Venice of Brazil”. Recife has two breathtaking islands, where the cultural centre is located.

> History

During the colonial era Recife served as arrival and trade base for immigrants and the sugar cane export. The actual capital of Pernambuco used to be Olinda until the Dutch conquered the land in the 17th century, and made Recife the new capital because of its direct access to the ocean. The Dutch build numerous architectures that can still be admired today. During the late 17th century the Potuguese won back the regime and kept Recife as capital city of Pernambuco. Recife underwent a strong development during this century. The sugar cane export emerged to become the most important sector of Pernambuco. Today large trade ports and cultural sites shape the city.

> City Life

The rapid development of the 20th century brought a lot of change also to Recife. During this time the typical two storey houses were knocked down and replaced by large buildings serving as industry and trade buildings as well as hotels and flats. Fortunately a part of the ancient architecture was preserved in form of chapels, churches and mansions that characterise Recife today.

Numerous festivals and events make Recife a perfect tourist attraction. Afro-Brazilian dances, Brazilian rhythms and street musicians impress any traveller.

In June a big ceremony takes place in Recife. Each year the Goddess of fresh water “Oxum” is being honoured with pleasant cultural evenings and joyful shows. The traditional festivities take place in a completely yellow room.

The numerous gift and oblations, such as flowers and beautiful plants are kept in yellow as well. Great musicians and a traditional orchestra play the drums sing African songs and entertain the audience with their classic Pernambucan style. The Pernambucan dancers show fascinating performances, each year these rituals that are supposed to scare away evil spirits. After the dance rituals the oblations are taken to a remote place in the middle of the nature. They are laid into a river and bid farewell in the goddess’s honour.

> Places of interest
One of the oldest monasteries of Brazil is located on the Rua do Imperador. The Igreja e Convento do Santo Antônio was built in 1603 and decorated with fantastic Dutch and Portuguese tiling in the course of the 17th century. The tiles’ numerous motives show holy scenes and the steeple can still be admired in all its grandeur.

The same district, Santo Antônio, has another church that was built during the late baroque period. The Nossa Senhora do Carmo was built in 1663, containing many gold plated sculptures. A gorgeous piece of cement work by Heinrich Mose (Munich, 1919) is placed at the main altar.

The Igreja Nossa Senhora da Conceição dos Militares is another church built during the late baroque period and is dedicated to the brotherhood of military garrison. It also is decorated with beautiful sculptures and paintings depicting the battle at Guararapes, where the Portuguese drove the Dutch out of the territory again. The whole interior is decorated with masses of gold.

Recife also has numerous museums such as the Museu do Estado de Pernambuco. The museum is located in a 19th century building formerly owned by the Baron Beberibe, founder of the Trade and Banking Union in Pernambuco.

A further museum, the Museu Arqueológico e Geográfico de Pernambuco, offers an exhibition of archaeological findings. More than 150 mio old fossils of fish or other animals are shown in a tropical atmosphere.

In Recife a lot can be learned about the former sugar cane trade of the 17th century. The Museu do Homem do Nordeste provides a rich inside view into the work and world trade of earlier days.

> Carnival in Recife

The carnival in Recife is of a different dimension. The Pernambucans, the inhabitants of the region of Pernambuco, celebrate carnival totally different compared to the other inhabitants of Brazil. Olinda and Recife has its own Samba style. The so-called “Maracatu“ is celebrated in the style of the Indians, in costumes with bow and arrow. The habitants parade the streets and dance their version of the carnival. A further dance-style is the “Frevo”, which is Recife’s individual dance with drums, triangles and further African instruments.

School classes, students, travellers and families often visit the wild life park “Parque Dois Irmãos”. Even though the variety of animals leaves a lot to be desired, the park offers great trails to nature friends that enjoy a walk. The 400-hectare large park grounds also enclose the "Mata Atlântica"- the Atlantic rain forest, of which only parts remained. The tropical deforestation of the 20th century made the Mata Atlântica one of the most endangered tropical forests. Since 1993 the Mata Atlântica is part of the UNESCO biosphere reserve.
