One of the most beautiful World Heritage Sites

Olinda ist he former capital of Pernambuco, located 7 km north of today’s capital city Recife. The whole city is built on a hill site and the numerous buildings from the 17th century, the chapels and churches of Portuguese, Dutch and Franciscan style form a fascinating image of a picturesque old town. Cultural attractions of literature, theatre, painting and sculpting offer a range of destinations for trips to this fantastic old town. Today it can call itself UNESCO World Heritage Site.

> History

Olinda was the first capital city of Pernambuco, founded in 1537 by the Portuguese Duarte Coelho Pereira. During the Dutch regime over Olinda (1630 – 1954) many buildings were burned down and partially rebuilt years later. As opposed to Recife the city of Olinda had no direct access to the ocean, which was an economic disadvantage, which led to Recife becoming the new capital of Pernambuco. It stayed the capital city even after the reoccupation through the Portuguese. However, Olinda continued to develop into one of the most beautiful cities.

> City Life

Today Olinda has about 35,000 inhabitants, who call their city “the beautiful” literally translated. And as a matter of fact, after a round trip through Olinda everyone realizes the beauty of this city. Olindas narrow alleys with the colourful two- storey houses and streets offer a perfect Caribbean summer atmosphere. Not many places in Brazil are so beautiful, colourful and full of culture. Which is one reason why Olinda was announced a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A walk through the old streets and alleys of Olinda can be very pleasant and relaxing. There are many small galleries, artist studios and neat cafes. The streets are usually filled with Brazilian, African or Portuguese rhythms.

Artistic dances are performed on the streets such as the Frevo or the Maracatu. In June Olinda’s artists traditionally parade the streets and celebrate their so-called Forro-festivals. The Forro is a typical music and dance style in Pernambuco, accompanied by instruments such as the Zabumba, the Triangel and the Sanfona.

Other alleys of this wonderful city hide numerous chapels and churches, their architecture reminding of the colonial era. The style of the churches in Olinda are varied: some are of an old Dutch style, next to another magnificant French cathedral amongst many Portuguese churches.
Pernambuco’s different regimes during the colonial times led to the variety of architecture styles, built on beautiful hill sites allowing a great Pacific view.
Old mansions left by the former sugar cane baron can still found in the suburban areas of Olinda. They are still in use today.

> Places of interest in Olinda
In Olinda there are 30 chapels and churches, reminding of the Dutch, Portuguese and French architectural styles. Villas, forts and residential buildings from colonial times are silhouetted against the beautiful tropical landscape. It is worth a visit to one of the oldest churches of Pernambuco, the Igreja da Sé. Situated on the highest point of Olinda it offers a beautiful panoramic view of the city.

Serving the slave trade in the 17th century the market of Ribeira offers handcrafted sculptures, eatable treats and specialities as well as souvenirs today. Olinda has a number of museums to offer to satisfy the interest in Pernambucan art or handmade art amongst others. Many of the former sugar cane barons’ villas of the 17th century are worth seeing. The museum for religious arts has paintings of the Brazilian baroque period on show apart from other priceless cultural heritage from all over the world.

The monastery of São Bento is one of the most beautiful in Brazil, delighting the public with Gregorian plainchant each Sunday; the monks offer homemade pastries and liqueurs for reasonable prices.

The old city centre is quite a site worth visiting as well. Streets and buildings of that style are seldom to be seen.

> Carnival in Olinda

The der Avenida Conde da Boa Vista in Olinda ist he starting point of the Pernambucan carnival, leading through the narrow alleys of Olinda and Recife. Most of the Brazilians and also the tourists regard this carnival as one of the most impressive one in the whole of Brazil.
The ten best carnival societies of the region practice for this one festival all year long. Dancers, choreographers, musicians and disguised entertainers create an impressive spectacle with the help of organizers.
